The taste of nostalgia

Dear KuierKos Family,

There are certain flavours in life that we never forget - the ones that instantly take us back to our childhood.

Do you remember walking to the corner store with a few coins in your hand? Chappies was always a must. Not just for the chewing gum, but for those little wrappers filled with the most interesting facts and sayings. We didn’t just chew - we read, we shared, we collected.

And then… fireballs. It was never just a sweet - it was a challenge! Who could keep it in their mouth the longest? Eyes watering, faces turning red, but no one wanted to give up.

At home, the simplest things tasted the best - fresh bread with Black Cat peanut butter and a drizzle of “leeutjie stroop” (Lyle’s GoldenSyrup). Sweet, sticky, and absolutely perfect.

Visits to grandparents were always special - especially because of the lucky packet. That small brown bag filled with surprises: a little toy, swieties, and pure excitement. Or Oupa’s special stash of Safari Fruit Dainties.

Weekends had their own flavours - bokkie polony, Escort “rooiworsies” in your hotdog, and after church … Caramel Flamby. These weren’t just meals; they were traditions.

When friends came over, out came the Quality Street. Everyone had a favourite, and you had to be quick! On warm days, nothing beat a cold glass of Oros.

And who could forget those Chomp ads - especially the little hippo trying to open his mouth wide enough for a bite? It always made you feel sorry for the little guy. We loved how cheeky he was, calling the big hippo “ougroot bek.”

Birthdays meant Yoggie Sips, chips with more orange colouring than you could imagine, and Dirkies - those toothpaste tubes filled with condensed milk - messy, but so worth it.

Then there were the church bazaars - a true sugar overload. Tables filled with homemade puddings and sweets, packets of sherbet, fluffy “spook asem,” and even those white candy cigarettes with the red tip (something that would definitely raise eyebrows today!).

As we grew older, our treats became a little more “fancy”, Inside Story, Tempo, and Chocolate Log made us feel all grown up.

At KuierKos, we believe food is more than just what’s on your plate, it’s the memories, the people, and the moments that come with it.

With warmth and a touch of nostalgia,
Marnella & Andreas
