Nostalgia, technology and meaningful connection ...

Dear KuierKos Family,
Today I’m feeling a little nostalgic. How are we already heading into March? Wasn’t it just January five minutes ago? Life feels like it’s on fast-forward - busier, louder, and constantly pinging.
And it made me wonder… when exactly did everything change?
There was a time when the phone in your house was heavy, bakelite, and attached to the wall. If it rang, everyone heard it - and whoever got there first answered. No caller ID. No “I’ll text you later.” Just commitment.
When I lived in Germany, my mom wrote me a letter every single week. A real letter. With a stamp. I waited for it, re-read it, and sometimes even kept it under my pillow. Today, if someone doesn’t reply within three minutes, we assume something is wrong.
We used to open giant paper maps in the car, which never folded back properly - to find a place. Now Google Maps calmly tells us where to turn … and we still argue with it.
My ouma only went to first year of high school, but she could do hoofrekening in seconds. Today we reach for a calculator to split a bill. And phone numbers? We used to know them by heart. Now we don’t even know our own, they’re safely saved in our phones.
Booking travel meant visiting a travel agent. Research meant opening an encyclopedia. Now we search, compare, scroll, click, Google … or just “ask Chat.”
Technology has made life incredibly convenient. Faster. Smarter. More connected.
But has it made it simpler?
Sometimes it feels like we’ve gained speed but lost stillness. We can reach anyone instantly, yet meaningful connection still happens best the old-fashioned way.
Around a table.
With good food.
With real conversation.
Altogether.
Maybe life hasn’t become easier or harder.
Maybe it’s just changed.
with love,
Marnella & Andreas
