Leave space for magic ...

Dear KuierKos Family,
Every year we start the new year by buying a very big calendar. The kind that completely takes over the dining table and leaves no room for a cup of coffee… or, in my case, a much more important glass of red wine. First, we fill in all the serious stuff. Holidays. Study days. Birthdays. Springbok Rugby fixtures. All the events we already know are coming. Then… the planning really begins.
But this year, I feel a little different about the whole planning thing. It’s starting to feel like the calendar, and the schedules, are quietly running the show. Coffee dates are booked months in advance. Spontaneous visits have become a rare and exotic event. Sometimes I can’t help but wonder if we’re making life a bit too full… all by ourselves. When I was much younger, and definitely before I turned 50, life needed far less planning. On the farm, a neighbour would pop in for a quick coffee before work… sometimes as early as 7am. Friends would stop by “just to say hello” and somehow still be there for lunch.
The best were those impromptu kuiers after church, proper potluck affairs with friends. No one worried about having enough chairs, matching plates, or whether the wine was in the correct glass. If there was a glass, it worked. It was a bit messy, wonderfully warm, completely spontaneous, and so much fun. Maybe what I really need is a few more spontaneous moments like that.
And if I’m being honest, KuierKos already lives in that space. You never quite know who will arrive, an old friend, a familiar face, or someone who was a stranger five minutes ago. So if you wake up one day and think, “Let’s just go,” and end up at our door, you’ve absolutely made our day. We love welcoming anyone who wants to pull up a chair at the Lang Tafel for a proper kuier. No bookings, no pressure, no perfect planning. Just coffee, conversation, and permission to slow down for a while.
Warm regards,
Marnella & Andreas
