Creating Our Own Traditions

Dear Kuierkos Family,

The holiday season is here, and with it comes that familiar mix of excitement, nostalgia, and a little chaos. Many of us who moved to the Netherlands, or anywhere new, quickly discover that traditions do not always travel neatly in our suitcases. We carry memories, recipes, and stories with us, but in a new country with its own customs, we also have to create new traditions for ourselves and for our children.

And let me be honest: after 18 years in the Netherlands, I still haven't fallen in love with celebrating Sinterklaas. We did it for the kids, of course, but this year it is all about Christmas for me. Our Christmas decorations are already up in the shop, yes, al klaar, and believe me, I've received plenty of commentary from the peanut gallery sitting at the pub terrace next door. Luckily, ek is nie op my bek geval nie.

When someone pointed out that Sinterklaas hasn't even arrived yet, I simply said, "Well, as far as I'm concerned, Sinterklaas can stay in Spain this year."

Perhaps a bit harsh, but sometimes you just have to say it like it is.

It wasn't that long ago that you couldn't buy a Christmas tree before 5 December. I must say, I'm very happy those days are over. Because when it comes to trees, I have a type. The perfect Christmas tree is shaped like a cone. Let's be honest. Dutch houses are cozy and floor space is precious. Poor Andreas knows that when we go to the garden center, he needs all the patience in the world.

It always goes like this:
"Let's try this one."
"No, hold that one up."
"Wait, maybe that one?"

And in the end, we always choose the first one. Luckily I know he loves me.

Every year the kids pick a special ornament, and we mark it with the date. They are tiny snapshots of our journey and traditions. Still, I do love a good themed tree. I can hear Andreas hold his breath. But this year it is all about affordability. With ribbons showing up on Christmas trees everywhere, that will be the theme.

This year we're hosting a Friendsgiving, a perfect excuse for a relaxed Sunday lunch. The Christmas Season is always so busy for us, and I don't want to miss out on the entire celebration. Fortunately, with a shop full of delicious dishes ready to defrost, warm, and serve, Dankie tog vir KuierKos! I finally get to dedicate my time to what I enjoy most. Decorating, setting a beautiful table, and feeding people.

Our own family Christmas is usually simple and quiet. Just a lovely brunch with the kids, slow, cozy, and just us. We will miss our families and their traditions, but we also cherish the ones we are building here together.

So whether you're planning Friendsgiving, Sinterklaas, or Christmas, I know KuierKos can make your celebrations a little easier, a little tastier, and a lot more joyful. From hearty meals to festive treats, we're here to bring the best to your table.

Warm hugs,
Marnella & Andreas
