Back in Bloems ... after our road trip through Cornwall!

Dear friends,

Andreas and I recently took a quick trip to the UK…just the two
of us. It was the first time in 19 years that we travelled without
the kids and the dog, and it felt both strange and wonderfully
freeing.

We set off early on Sunday morning, armed with biltong and water, heading to Calais. From there we took the Eurotunnel to Folkestone. Travelling by train under the sea is always an experience, just enough time to close your eyes for a quick nap before arriving on the other side.

I have to say, Andreas is simply amazing at driving on the “wrong” side of the road. This was our third time driving in the UK, and every time we are reminded just how big the country is. The miles still confuse us a bit!

We had three simple missions for this trip: to spend time together, to see the coast of Cornwall, and to visit The Story of Emily. Along the way, we were treated to endless rolling hills, vibrant green wheat fields, and bright yellow canola stretching as far as the eye can see. There were sheep everywhere and so many newborn lambs, which made everything feel even more alive and special.

One of the most meaningful stops for me was The Story of Emily. It shares the life and legacy of Emily Hobhouse, a remarkable woman who exposed the suffering of women and children in British concentration camps during the Anglo-Boer War. Her courage and compassion helped bring attention to injustice and ultimately improved conditions for so many.

With Mother’s Day around the corner, this visit touched me deeply. It made me reflect on the sacrifices women throughout history have made, often quietly and bravely, to ensure a better future for their children. It left me with a deep sense of gratitude and admiration.

And of course, no KuierKos trip would be complete without
food memories. We enjoyed wonderful fish and chips made in beef
dripping at Rick Stein in Padstow… crispy, rich and unforgettable. There were also many lovely coffee stops with pastry treats along the way… proper Cornish pasties, sweet fudge, and all the small indulgences that make travelling so special.

It was a gentle reminder of how important it is to pause, to breathe, and to reconnect, not just with each other, but with the beauty around us.
