🏉 Kuierkos Autumn Newsletter – Rugby & Good Memories

Liewe Kuierkos Familie,
There’s definitely a change in temperature in the air — winter is knocking!
This Saturday, it’s a big one — South Africa against France in Paris! I know many of you are packing your green and gold for the big trek south. Let’s hope our boytjies stay focused and keep the winning streak alive. There’s truly nothing better than a Springbok win!
Growing up in a rugby-mad family with four brothers, you never planned anything on a Saturday. Winter in South Africa means rugby — first the school games, then the provincial matches, and finally those international clashes that got everyone shouting at the TV.
Do you remember when every school’s first team had their own song? They would play it over the loudspeakers while the students formed a line in front of the stadium, waiting for the boys to run onto the field. I must admit, I’ve listened to “Simply the Best” (Tina Turner) more times than I can count. The excitement, the cheering, and the goosebumps when that music started — nothing quite like it!
Back then, the players were often more scared of the aunties next to the field than their opponents! Those tannies from Thabazimbi — eish, they took their kids game serous. It was a war zone. And heaven help the ref if he made a mistake… there was plenty of moeilikheid both on and off the field!
Remember halftime oranges? Lekker! Water was just a big container filled with hosepipe water and plastic cups. No fancy energy drinks or personal bottles. The uniforms were in our school colours, heavy cotton rugby jersey and the shorts… well, short shorts! Long socks and togs. From primary school up to standard 6, the oukies played barefoot — no boots needed. And if you forgot your togs, you simply borrowed from your pel.
Times have changed, but the heart of rugby — that passion, community, and laughter — is still alive. Whether you’re watching in Paris, Pretoria, or from your couch in Putten, may your weekend be filled with warmth, good company, and the joy of the game. Don’t forget to enjoy lekker Kuierkos treats while you watch the rugby!
Dankie, Andreas & Marnella
