Theewaterskloofdam 2019, Western Cape

Seeing the eery, desolate landscape that is the dry bottom of the Theewaterskloof dam, the main water supply for Cape Town, was both breathtaking and heartbreaking. It is very infrequently that I feel the drive to create out of negative emotions, but seeing the beautifully sad trees in the baron landscape tugged on my heartstrings in ways that are impossible to ignore.

Today, the urbanisation trend sees continuous population growth around the major cities and metropoles. City living is busy. It seems that people carry on with their day-to-day business assuming that somewhere in the background, someone is making sure all the boxes are checked to keep the wheels of the economy and every day life turning.

We seldom pause to reflect on how Mother Nature and our natural resources are coping under the ever-growing demands that come with population growth and modern living with all its creature comforts. As a water-stressed country, South Africa in recent years have experienced more frequent, more intense and more prolonged periods of drought necessitating government to declare rolling local and national states of disasters since 2015.

We have much to be thankful for, and much to pray for.

This image was taken in May 2019 during one of the worst droughts in Cape Town’s history. These skeletons of trees would normally be submerged when the dam is close to full. Thankfully due to above-normal rainfall in early 2020 in the catchment area, the dam was at 100% full about a year after the making of this image. Sadly, majority of the rest of South Africa experienced below-normal rainfall in this period – a reminder of how global warming unravels previously dependable weather patterns.
